Nový román kontroverzního francouzského spisovatele Michela Houellebecqa je životním bilancováním šestačtyřicátníka, který vzpomíná na své bývalé lásky. Nepřekvapí, že nechybí naturalistické popisy sexuality, ale i lyrické, melancholické úvahy nad vztahy obecně, pojmy láska, přitažlivost apod. Ve druhé půlce románu vypravěč zjišťuje, že nemůže žít bez Camille, jedné z milenek, a výčitky i sebelítost ho pohání k něčemu, co vypadá jako stalking. Když je vypravěč na dně, rozhoduje se mezi vírou a mezi antidepresivy. „Bůh je průměrný scenárista“, poznamenává, a je jasné, pro jakou variantu se rozhodl. Houellebecq má nezaměnitelný, osobitý styl, pracující zejména s nenápadnými, ale promyšlenými asociacemi.
